FusionFall Re:Fuse (abbreviated as Re:Fuse) is an in-development fangame which is designed to be a single-player remake of the Cartoon Network MMORPG FusionFall, created in a newer version of the Unity game engine. The project is being led by a FusionFall community member by the name of Brodan, and he had gotten help from a few side-developers and other contributors during the development of the game. It is unknown if the game will be reimagined in its entirety, or only include the Future section of the original.
A demo was released on August 23, 2020, and it received updates to fix the most major bugs of the program. The final version of the demo can be downloaded in the link below. However, it is still pretty unstable in places.
On April 26, 2021, the projects Discord server was deleted. When asked about the status of Re:Fuse, Brodan stated that the project had been cancelled. Most of those who were working on the game have since moved to working on other FusionFall fan projects, such as FusionFall RE:SPAWN.
On September 18, 2021, Brodan posted a video entitled 'Refuse VR Test 01' on the FusionFall subreddit. The video is of a test of FusionFall Re:Fuse in VR, set in Future Sector V. In the replies he posted, he explains the reason as to why the project was initially cancelled and that it is now back in development.
History
Pre-Demo Release
About three months after the closing of FusionFall Retro. Brodan had released an unofficial trailer for a FusionFall revival project that was in progress on his YouTube channel, which he had dubbed "Re:Fuse".
Following the trailer, Brodan had begun to release preview videos showcasing areas and mechanics recreated from the original FusionFall.
His last trailer was posted on July 28, 2020. This preview video had showcased basic combat functions such as weapons, Nano Powers, enemies, and dying.
Demo Release
On August 23, 2020, the first version of the demo, Version 1.2, was released on the projects Discord server.
Not long after it's release, the demo received updates to address many issues present within the program.
The final version of the demo features the following elements:
- The opening timejump cutscene from the original game (the tutorial is not present, the player is immediately teleported to Sector V after the cutscene is over).
- Three Nanos in total that are available from the start (Wilt, Numbuh Two, and Eddy).
- Simplified versions of the Spawn Spree and Shock and Ow Missions.
- The Future versions of Sector V, Pokey Oaks (North and South), Peach Creek Commons, and Candy Cove are either fully explorable or partially explorable. All other Future areas are blocked off by a giant wall.
- The KND Training Area and Pokey Oaks Junior High Infected Zones are present and fully explorable.
- Fusion Eddy's lair can be accessed in Pokey Oaks Junior High. It is populated by Tech Drones, and Fusion Eddy himself is at the end of the lair.
- Multiple Cartoon Network characters and generic NPC's are present, but they do not have any missions. The demo even includes a new NPC, BMO, who has his own voice line and animations.
- The E.G.G.E.R. is present in Sector V, but it is functionless, as Taros and C.R.A.T.E.s are not in the demo.
- Fusion Spawns, ShockTanglers, Newspaper Ninja's, and Painsaws are present in their respective areas.
- Don Doom is present.
Change in Direction
On February 14, 2021, Brodan announced in the projects Discord server that Re:Fuse would be taken in a new direction due to the release of OpenFusion, and hinted that the new direction for the game would involve virtual reality.
Initial Cancellation
On April 26, 2021, the Re:Fuse Discord server was deleted. When asked about the status of Re:Fuse, Brodan stated that the project had been cancelled. Most of those who were working on the game have since moved to working on other FusionFall fan projects such as FusionFall RE:SPAWN.
It was later explained by Brodan via a reply on the FusionFall subreddit that, upon returning from boot camp, he discovered that those who were assisting in the games development had changed the game in a way that made it far more difficult to develop, which caused him to lose his motivation to continue work on the project. This was until he recovered a version of the game, which reignited his interest in the project, and he set to work on adding experimental features.
Revival
On September 18, 2021, Brodan posted a video entitled 'Refuse VR Test 01' on the FusionFall subreddit. The video is of a test of FusionFall Re:Fuse in VR, set in Future Sector V. In the replies he posted, he appreciates the positive feedback to the project, says that he'll release more content as he makes it, and hopes to open his Discord back up.
Differences from FusionFall
In General
- Re:Fuse is created in a newer version of Unity, as such, everything is a recreation.
- The game is meant to be single-player, but multiplayer functionality was discussed.
The Demo
- In the original FusionFall, the player go would progress through a tutorial level before proceeding to the Future area, and would be able to customize their character. However, in Re:Fuse, they skip the tutorial level right after the introduction cutscene and are unable to customize their avatar.
- The feature to customize character's might have come in later updates of the game if development had continued.
- In the original FusionFall, prior to the Academy update, the first three Nano's were obtained as the played leveled up, and were Buttercup, Numbuh Two, and Eddy. In Re:Fuse, The first three Nano's are automatically obtained, and are Wilt, Numbuh 2, and Eddy.
- In order to change the Nano they are using, the player must first press the number key assigned to the Nano they have out. Attempting to press a number key for a Nano not currently out while using a different Nano will do nothing.
- There is no Nano Potion system. Nanos will be fully charged when they are deactivated and then reactivated, allowing the player to use them infinitely without consequence. The Nanos energy also drains far slower than in the original game.
- The player does not get to select the powers their Nanos have. Wilt has Crazy Air, Numbuh Two has Fast Feet, and Eddy has Jawbreaker Break.
- Nanos do not animate when emotes are done.
- It is unknown why it was decided to replace the Buttercup Nano with that of Wilt. A possible explanation could be that Wilt's Nano power, Crazy Air, which is a jump power, would allow the player to explore the world better.
- The player only has access to two weapons, the Lightning Gun, and the Proton Meta Mace. There is also no inventory system.
- Touching liquid fusion matter and fusion matter infected ground does not hurt the player.
- When the player dies, they are not taken to a Resurrect 'Em. Instead, they are still able to use Nanos while they are knocked out, and if the player uses the Eddy Nano's power, Jawbreaker Break, while they are incapacitated, they will be revived.
- There is only a minimap, the full map is unavailable.
- The chat system is gone, but the player can still use emotes.
- Numbuh Five is not present in the game. In the original, she was beside Buttercup in Pokey Oaks North, but in the demo, she is nowhere to be found.
- Eddy, Fusion Eddy, and Buttercup's models in Re:Fuse are the same models that were used in later versions of FusionFall Retro.
- Being a demo, it does not save player progress.
